Peyrelevade - the name of our holiday property - is set on a hillside bordering the Dordogne and the Lot-et-Garonne. Peyrelevade's stone farmhouse and barn have been renovated to create three lovely holiday cottages (Arc-en-ciel, Le Tournesol & Le Soleil) and a caretaker's apartment. There is also a detached house called Les Voisins. There are two swimming pools (with alarm) and fields and woodland surround the property.

Le Soleil sleeps 2-4 people and is part of the original farmhouse. The converted barn is changed into two independent cottages: Le Tournesol (sleeps 4) and Arc-en-ciel (sleeps 6); they can be booked separately (own entrance and private terrace) or as one house (sleeps 10). The farmhouse and barn are at opposite ends of a shady courtyard where the smaller swimming pool is located. Surrounded by trees and shrubs, the larger swimming pool is set in the grounds behind the barn.

The detached family house Les Voisins is located at a 100 yards from the main house and has its own partly covered courtyard.

The cottages

Peyrelevade has three holiday cottages: Le Soleil (sleeps 4), Le Tournesol (sleeps 4), Arc-en-ciel (sleeps 6),  and a detached house called “Les Voisins” (sleeps 6).

Le Tournesol is the smaller part of the converted barn (sleeps 4) and is also on two levels. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom, which includes a shower attachment. One bedroom has a queen-size double bed and the other has twin beds. Downstairs, there is a spacious living room with a kitchen/dining area. There is a washing machine and a radio/cassette/CD player. French windows in the living area lead to a terrace, where you'll find a barbecue and furniture for open-air dining. The swimming pool for Le Tournesol can be seen from the terrace where you can eat in the shade of an old willow tree.

The local area

Villefranche-du-Périgord (an 6-minute drive away) is a small pretty town in the Dordogne. It is a fortified, medieval "bastide", with colonnaded shops, bars and restaurants. Along the shady streets you'll also find a newspaper shop selling UK papers, a post office, a bank with a "hole in the wall", a pharmacy, two small supermarkets, a good butcher and two bakeries selling a wide variety of breads and pastries. The church in the market square makes an interesting visit on Market Day.

Peyrelevade itself is actually located across the Dordogne border in the Lot-et-Garonne. It is a six-minute-drive away from the village of Sauveterre-la-Lémance. Sauveterre is smaller than Villefranche, but it still has a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants, including a bakery, a chemist’s, a post office and a museum of local pre-history in the Town Hall. Sauveterre also has a weekly open-air meal in the village centre which is always fun!

History Villefranche-du-perigord:
An ancient fortified village (bastide) founded in 1261 by Alphonse de Poitiers under the name Villefranche-de-Belvès.

Architecture
Marketplace with stone pillars situated opposite houses built in the XIIth & XIVth century; church designed by Abadie in 1865 and based upon his masterpiece the Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre in Paris.

If you come by car and you have a GPS-system, the following coordinates will take you to our doorstep: N 44.58621 and E 1.06739

·         FROM CAEN TO VILLEFRANCHE-DU-PERIGORD

·         Take the N13 (signposted for Paris), via Lisieux as far as Evreux. Go around the south of Evreux, following signs for Dreux and Chartres, which will take you along the N154.

·         At the roundabout to the north of Nonancourt, join the N12, towards Dreux.

·         Take the ring road around Dreux, then rejoin the N154, towards Chartres.

·         Take the ring road around Chartres, rejoining the N154 on the south-east side of the city, following signs for Orléans.

·         At Allaines, there will be signs for the A10 autoroute. Follow these and head towards Orléans. (If you’d like to break your journey, Orléans has a large number of hotels at a wide range of prices).

·         At Orléans, leave the A10 (after junction 14), and join the A71 signposted for Clermont Ferrand. As you approach Vierzon, leave the A71 and take the A20 towards Chateauroux and Limoges.

·         Head south on the A20, signposted for Brive and Toulouse.

·         Leave this motorway at junction 56 (Rodez/Gourdon), and head west via Gourdon to Villefranche du Périgord, which is on the D660.

·         FROM CALAIS TO VILLEFRANCHE-DU-PERIGORD

·         You could take the A26/A1 autoroute route to Paris, following the motorways around the eastern side of Paris and then heading south to Orléans, but we find the following journey more pleasant.

·         Our suggested route, avoiding Paris and its traffic.

·         From Calais, follow signs for the A16 to Boulogne.

·         Follow the A16 as far as Abbeville, then at junction 23 take the A28 to Rouen.

·         As you enter the northern edge of Rouen, follow signs for Caen/Le Havre.

·         Your route follows the D18 around the eastern side of the city to take you towards the A13.

·         Join the A13 at junction 22, following the direction for Paris.

·         At junction 19, leave the A13 and join the A154 signposted for Evreux.

·         This road becomes the N154 dual carriageway, taking you round the eastern side of Evreux, following the direction for Dreux.

From Villefranche-du-Perigord to “Peyrelevade”

 at Villefranche-du-Perigord, in the square where the post office is located:

·         take the D57, direction Loubejac/Puy L’Eveque

·         after 2 km make a right turn direction Loubejac/Sauveterre

·         keep following the signs to Loubejac (2,5 and 1,1 km)

·         at sign Loubejac 06, km, go straight in the direction of Sauveterre

·         next junction, make a right turn direction Sauveterre (7 km)

·         next junction, make a right turn direction Sauveterre (6km)

·         make a left turn the second path going up, that’s after 1500 m, just before a tiny little bridge

·         Peyrelevade is the second house on your right

You can also fly to Bergerac with Ryanair or Flybe.  It takes 45 minutes to travel from Bergerac airport to “Peyrelevade” by car.

Things to do

Peyrelevade is a short drive away from the Dordogne River and some of the most beautiful and remarkable parts of France. Understandably, the green Michelin Guide gives this part of the Dordogne Valley "three stars" – top marks for the river, the countryside and extraordinary caves with their mysterious, ancient formations.

Beynac, La Roque Gageac, and Domme are all about half an hour from Peyrelevade and are well worth exploring. A further quarter of an hour away are Sarlat-la-Canéda and Les Eyzies. You'll probably also want to make more than one visit to the delightful bastide towns of Villefranche-du-Périgord (just a few minutes away) and Montpazier.

As well as visiting caves, the local area offers golf, fishing, tennis and riding. Canoeing is, of course, available everywhere along the River Dordogne and the River Lot. And if you like châteaux, there are several nearby, including the charming Bonaguil and the stunning Biron.
